Kameeldoring (camel thorn, Vachellia erioloba) is the braai wood most South Africans grew up with. It is dense and takes a while to catch, but once it's going it gives you a deep bed of hot coals that lasts — exactly what you want when you're braaing for a crowd and the meat goes on in rounds. Harvested under permit from dead wood, dry-fumigated and brought in from Namibia.

It works in the fireplace too. In a closed-combustion unit you top up less often and get a steady heat; in an open fireplace you get a proper bed of glowing coals. Kameeldoring is the bigger, denser piece with the longest-holding coals; sekeldoring is smaller, lights faster and burns fiercer. Start it with a handful of hardwood kindling and give it a few minutes.

Delivered across greater Cape Town, the Winelands and the West Coast — one flat fee per route from R200, the bags carried in and stacked at no extra charge, typically within 1–2 business days. Every ±18kg bag is seasoned and stored under cover and carries our Dry Guarantee.

Kameeldoring: common questions

How many bags of kameeldoring do I need for a braai for a crowd?

One bag to braai on, whatever the head count — a ±18kg bag of kameeldoring gives a full grid of coals with some to spare. Add a second bag if you want a fire to sit around once the food is off. If there's a potjie going alongside, add a bag of Kindling/Potjie and feed it separately.

Kameeldoring or sekeldoring?

Kameeldoring is the bigger, denser piece with the longest-holding coals; sekeldoring is smaller, lights faster and burns fiercer. Braaing for a crowd in rounds, take kameeldoring. For a quick weeknight braai, take sekeldoring.

Is kameeldoring for an open fireplace or a closed-combustion unit?

Both. In an open fireplace it lays down a glowing coal bed — get the fire up with a few pieces of bloekom, then let the kameeldoring take over. It is loved by closed-combustion owners too: very dry and dense, so fewer top-ups and a steady heat behind the glass. Our recommendation for a closed unit is bloekom or blackwattle.
