Delivery to the City Bowl
The Firewood Company delivers kaggelhout, braai wood and restaurant-grade charcoal to Gardens, Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof, Vredehoek, Higgovale, Bo-Kaap and De Waterkant for R350 per drop, and to Woodstock and Salt River for R300. Deliveries run Monday to Friday, typically within 1–2 business days. Narrow one-ways are handled with a smaller truck.
Delivery fee: R350 flat across the City Bowl; Woodstock, Salt River and Walmer Estate (7925 / 7915) are R300.
Delivery days: Monday to Friday. Typical turnaround is 1–2 business days; in peak winter weeks it can stretch to 2–4. The turnaround for your order is shown at checkout before you pay, and we update it as demand changes.
Cut-off: order by Thursday 15:00 to be on the Friday run. Orders after that can sometimes be squeezed onto Friday morning’s trucks if there’s space — ask, don’t count on it.
The street, honestly. Between Kloof Nek, the Bo-Kaap and the one-ways off Buitengracht there are streets in this hub where a truck gets one attempt and no room to turn. That is our problem, not yours, but two lines in the order notes make it disappear: whether we can stop outside, and whether the front door is up a flight of steps from the pavement. Where a big truck genuinely will not fit, we send a smaller one.
Offloading and stacking the bags: included — courtyard, hallway, under the stairs, next to the fireplace, up to the roof terrace. Unbagging — emptying the bags onto your pile — is R10 a bag, added at checkout.

What the City Bowl orders
The City Bowl gets cold before the rest of Cape Town does, and it is the hills that do it.
Tamboerskloof, upper Gardens and Oranjezicht sit in the bowl between Lion’s Head and the mountain, and from about May the sun drops behind Lion’s Head in the middle of the afternoon — a house in Gardens can be in shade at four while Sea Point, on the other side of the hill, is still in it. Vredehoek gets it the other way round, under Devil’s Peak, and waits for the morning sun instead. Add a hundred-year-old semi with high ceilings, single-brick walls and an original hearth in the front room, and you have the reason this is fireplace country — not a lifestyle fireplace, a working one, lit most evenings from May to August.
So what we’d send a City Bowl house in winter is bloekom and kaggelhout, on repeat. Not a seasonal stock-up like Constantia — a running supply, because a Gardens courtyard has room for a week of wood, not a month of it.
Summer flips it. The braais in this part of town are small, walled and close to the neighbours: a kettle in a courtyard off Kloof Street, a built-in in a Woodstock backyard, a pizza oven on a roof terrace in De Waterkant. That is charcoal and briquette territory rather than open-fire territory, which is why we’d send sekelbos and lump charcoal here in January as readily as bloekom in July.

25 years under the mountain
We started delivering into the City Bowl in 2001, when a fair number of these fireplaces were still bricked up and the pizza ovens hadn’t arrived yet.
The houses have changed hands, the restaurants have turned over several times, and the wood has not. Bloekom is still what a hundred-year-old hearth wants. The only things that have improved are the drying and the trucks — and the fact that the truck turns up on the day the order says.

Sekelbos or rooikrans — both light fast and get fiercely hot, which is what a pizza oven wants. Throw a handful of wingerd stompies on for the smell. Restaurant-grade lump charcoal if you’re running the oven long and want a stable bed.
