Delivery to Vredehoek & Tamboerskloof

The Firewood Company delivers kaggelhout, heat logs, Namibian hardwood and charcoal to Vredehoek, Tamboerskloof, Higgovale, Devil’s Peak Estate and University Estate for R300 per drop. Deliveries run Monday to Friday, typically within 1–2 business days, and the fee covers the carry up the steps and the stacking at the top.

Delivery fee: R300 for the whole of both suburbs, Higgovale and the two estates included, on any size order. No minimum.

Delivery days: Monday to Friday. Expect 1–2 business days most of the year; when the first cold front of May arrives and every flat on Derry Street orders in the same week, allow 2–4. Checkout shows the live turnaround before you pay.

Cut-off: Thursday 15:00 puts you on Friday’s City Bowl truck. Later than that, WhatsApp us — a Friday-morning gap does happen, but it isn’t something to plan around.

Carrying and stacking: in the fee, steps and all. Want the wood emptied into a store rather than left in bags? Unbagging is R10 a bag, added at checkout.

Access: these are the steepest streets in the City Bowl. If your parking is above or below the front door, or the wood store is down a flight of garden steps, say so in the order notes and roughly how many steps — we bring the right number of hands.

Two shoulders of the City Bowl, two kinds of weather

Vredehoek and Tamboerskloof are the two shoulders of the City Bowl, and they get different weather. Vredehoek climbs the eastern side under Devil’s Peak, from Upper Buitenkant up Derry Street to the blocks below De Waal Drive, and the south-easter arrives here before anywhere else in town: it pours over the saddle between the mountain and the peak and lands on the suburb at full strength, which is why people who live here call it the windiest in Cape Town without much argument. Devil’s Peak also keeps the morning sun off the upper streets until well after breakfast, so the art deco blocks lower down and the older houses higher up both run a fire from May. Tamboerskloof is the western shoulder, on the slope below Signal Hill and Lion’s Head along Kloof Nek Road, and it loses the sun the other way — mid-afternoon, behind Lion’s Head, while the harbour is still bright. Its housing is a split too: Victorian and Edwardian houses with a working hearth on the lower streets, and blocks of flats with a small closed unit or nothing at all further up towards Kloof Nek, where Camps Bay Drive drops over to the other side. Higgovale, tucked under the mountain above Tamboerskloof, is bigger houses, steeper driveways and bigger fireplaces. Everywhere up here, wood stacked in the open gets blown about; stack it in the garage or against the leeward wall.

What we’d put on the truck for a Vredehoek flat: two bags of heat logs and a bag of short pieces. For a Tamboerskloof or Higgovale house: six bloekom and two kameeldoring, stacked out of the wind.

How much is firewood delivery to Vredehoek or Tamboerskloof?

R300 flat, and the same fee for Higgovale, Devil’s Peak Estate and University Estate, whatever the size of the order. It shows at checkout before you pay.

Which wood suits a Vredehoek flat with a closed-combustion unit?

Heat logs first — uniform pieces, little ash and no bark on the floor. Short Pieces if you’d rather burn real bloekom and the firebox is a small one. Either sits in a cupboard without looking like a woodpile.

Where should I store wood in a wind like ours?

Out of it. A garage, a store cupboard, or a stack against the wall the south-easter doesn’t reach, off the ground and covered on top. Tell us where in the order notes and the driver stacks it there rather than at the gate.

Our house is up a steep flight of steps from the road. Is that a problem?

No — it is normal for these two suburbs. Put the number of steps and where the bags should end up in the order notes, and the delivery fee covers carrying them up and stacking them.

Is the wood dry enough for a fire tonight?

Yes. Every bag is seasoned and kept under cover at our Parow yard until it goes on the truck, so it catches properly and burns hot instead of hissing and smoking. Do you deliver to Devil’s Peak Estate and University Estate?

Yes — both are on the same R300 City Bowl run as Vredehoek, and so is Higgovale. Use your normal street address at checkout and the fee shows before you pay.

Can you deliver to a block of flats in Vredehoek?

Yes. Put the block name, the floor and whether there is a lift in the order notes, and the driver brings the bags up. If the building wants deliveries through a particular entrance, tell us that too.

Is Kloof Nek Road too steep for your truck?

No. Kloof Nek, the upper streets of Tamboerskloof and the Higgovale driveways are all on our regular round. The smaller truck comes up the City Bowl as standard; tell us if the gate is narrow or the driveway is shared.
