Blue Gum / Bloekom

Bloekom firewood is the wood most Cape Town fireplaces run on: seasoned blue gum, sourced in the Western Cape, in 20kg bags. Blue gum is a medium-density hardwood, lighter than blackwattle and well short of kameeldoring, and that is exactly why it is the everyday wood. It lights readily, burns strong and even with a bright flame, and its coals are good enough for a weeknight chop under the grid. In a fireplace it burns faster than the dense Namibian woods, so you add a log a little more often; for a fire that has to hold all evening, move up to blackwattle. It works in an open fireplace, a closed-combustion unit and under a braai grid in a pinch.
