The Firewood Company delivers kaggelhout, braai wood, Namibian hardwood and charcoal to Newlands, Rondebosch, Rosebank and Mowbray for R300 per drop. Deliveries run Monday to Friday, typically within 1–2 business days, and the driver carries the bags through the side gate to the wood store and stacks them — that is in the fee.

Access: Victorian driveways were built for a horse, not a truck, and the wood store is usually through a side gate. Tell us whether the gate is locked and where the bags go. On a big cricket day at Newlands the streets around the ground fill early — a morning delivery is the easy answer.

The middle of fireplace country

Newlands is the wettest suburb in Cape Town, and among the first to lose the light. Table Mountain stands directly to the west, so by mid-afternoon in June the sun has gone behind it, and the streets between Newlands Avenue and the Liesbeek are in shade while Sea Point still has an hour of sun. Up towards Kirstenbosch on Rhodes Drive, the houses and the hearths get bigger, and so should the order.
