Wood use varies with the quality and efficiency of your fireplace, how you regulate the air control, and whether the unit is the right size for the space it heats. Namibian hardwood gives roughly 1.4 times the heat of bloekom, kilo for kilo, which is why fewer bags go further. Prices are today’s shop prices; the delivery fee for your route is added at checkout.
How the numbers work
Fireplace. A medium closed-combustion unit on a 4–6 hour fire burns about one bag of the blend — half bloekom, half kameeldoring. Smaller units and shorter fires use less, larger and longer use more, and an open fireplace uses about half again because most of its heat goes up the chimney. We count fifteen fires a month, not thirty, because a Cape winter has warm days between the fronts. One bag of kindling and one box of firelighters for every five bags of wood. Braai. One bag of kameeldoring to braai on, whatever the head count; two when the meat goes on in rounds for a big crowd; a bag more if you want a fire to sit around afterwards, and a bag of potjie kindling if there is a pot going. Kettles get a 5kg bag of Namib Charcoal for a family braai and a 10kg bag of lump for a crowd; a kamado gets lump. Low and slow starts on briquettes with lump for the sear.
