Loose Rooikrans

Loose rooikrans is the Cape’s braai wood for sale all year by the piece: 250 to 3,000 pieces, delivered from Parow across Cape Town, the Winelands and the West Coast, then carried in and stacked within 50 m of where the truck offloads. The Firewood Company’s Dry Guarantee doesn’t cover it: rooikrans is scarce and often sells before it has dried right down, so a loose load is for buyers with covered storage.

Best for / not for

• 250 pieces: a first loose order, or a small covered wood store.
• 500 pieces: a household that braais often.
• 1,000 pieces: a big household or a guest house.
• 2,000 or 3,000 pieces: bulk rooikrans for venues, bomas and big households that braai often.
• No covered storage? Buy rooikrans wood by the bulk bag of 20 pieces.
• Coals that hold longer? Bagged kameeldoring wood. Several braai woods? The braai wood combo.
• Fireplace wood by the piece? Bulk firewood (loose blue gum) or loose black wattle.
• Weber or kettle braai? Use briquettes.

How to store and light it

Stack it under a roof, off the ground, with air moving through it. To light: a firelighter under a handful of pine kindling, a few pieces on top with gaps for air, and it’s away.
