Delivery to Mowbray, Rosebank & Observatory

The Firewood Company delivers kaggelhout, braai wood, Namibian hardwood and charcoal to Mowbray, Little Mowbray, Rosebank and Observatory for R300 per drop. Deliveries run Monday to Friday, with Saturdays on request, typically within 1–2 business days, and the driver carries the bags in and stacks them at the fireplace, up the stairs or in the back yard — that is in the fee. Next door, Newlands & Rondebosch has its own page.

Delivery fee: R300 flat from the Rosebank side of Rondebosch Common to the Observatory end of Lower Main Road, one bag or twenty. No minimum order.

Delivery days: Monday to Friday, and Saturdays on request when there is enough demand. Most orders here arrive within 1–2 business days; in the wettest weeks of winter, when the whole of the Southern Suburbs orders at once, allow 2–4. Checkout shows the current turnaround before you pay.

Cut-off: Thursday 15:00 for Friday’s Southern Suburbs run. An order after that sometimes squeezes onto the Friday truck — and ask, but plan on the next run.

Carry-in and stacking: in the fee, and in this part of town that often means up a flight of stairs or through a narrow passage to a back yard. Tell us in the order notes and the driver comes prepared. If you would rather have the wood loose than in bags, unbagging is R10 a bag at checkout.

Flats, communes and digs: put the block or house name, the flat number, the buzzer and whether there is a lift in the order notes. If four of you are ordering for one house, one order with everything on it saves three delivery fees.

Parking on the narrow streets: Observatory and Little Mowbray were laid out before cars. The truck stops where it can, the driver carries the rest, and a phone number that gets answered on the day makes it quick.

Victorian terraces, the university and Lower Main Road

This is the old, close-packed end of the Southern Suburbs. Observatory is a grid of Victorian semis and terraces with a small cast-iron fireplace in the front room and a bricked-in braai in a back yard the size of a stoep — the most fireplaces per hectare anywhere we deliver, and most of them still in use. Mowbray and Little Mowbray are the same houses a decade later and a little larger, climbing from the Main Road up towards the mountain; Rosebank opens out into bigger gardens between the railway line and the streets that lead on to Rondebosch and the university. And running through all of it is UCT, which means digs, communes and flats full of students who discover in May that the beautiful old fireplace is the only heating the house has.

So the order here is different from Constantia’s. It is more bags, more often, to more addresses: two or three bags of bloekom a week to a house in Obs through winter, Short Pieces for the narrow original grates, kindling and firelighters because nobody has an axe, and a bag of rooikrans or charcoal for the back-yard braai when the weather turns. The bigger Rosebank houses order like the rest of the Southern Suburbs — a dozen bags at a time into a proper wood store. The truck comes in from Parow along the N2 and off at Liesbeek Parkway, about twenty minutes, and Lower Main Road is the one street on the route the driver plans around.

What Mowbray, Rosebank & Observatory orders

Blue Gum / Bloekom Seasoned ±20kg — R109 — the front-room fireplace wood for Obs and Mowbray. Lights first time, burns long and even, and a bag sees a house through two or three winter evenings.

Short Pieces — Blue Gum & Blackwattle — R105 — cut shorter for the small Victorian cast-iron grates that a standard log will not fit. The Observatory bag.

Premium Kindling & Starters — R55 — because a digs has neither an axe nor a chopping block. One bag of kindling lights a winter’s worth of fires.

Mowbray, Rosebank & Observatory firewood delivery — FAQ

How much is firewood delivery to Mowbray, Rosebank or Observatory?

R300 flat per drop, the same for Little Mowbray, and the same for one bag or twenty. Checkout shows it before you pay. If several of you share a house, one combined order saves the extra fees.

My fireplace in Observatory is tiny — what fits?

Short Pieces of bloekom and blackwattle, cut shorter for exactly the small cast-iron grates in the Victorian semis of Obs and Mowbray. Add a bag of kindling and a box of firelighters and the fire lights without an axe or a struggle.

Do you deliver to student digs and communes?

Yes, and we do a lot of it. Put the house or block name, the flat number, the buzzer and a phone number that will be answered in the order notes. The driver carries the bags up the stairs and stacks them where you say.

Do you deliver on a Saturday in this part of the Southern Suburbs?

On request. The Southern Suburbs route runs Monday to Friday, and we do Saturday deliveries when there is enough demand on the day, so ask us on . Otherwise the factory shop at 35 Tredoux Street, Parow is open Saturdays 08:00–12:45 for collection, and we load it for you.

Is the wood dry when it arrives?

Yes. Every bag is seasoned and kept under cover at our Parow yard until it goes on the truck, so it lights properly and burns hot instead of hissing. That is the Dry Guarantee we have stood behind for 25 years: if a bag disappoints, tell us and we make it right. Read the Dry Guarantee.

Which wood for a back-yard braai in Obs or Mowbray?

Rooikrans for a quick weeknight fire in a small built-in — it lights easily and coals fast. Namib charcoal or briquettes if the yard is too tight for an open wood fire or the neighbours are close. Kameeldoring when the whole commune is coming over.

Can you leave the wood if nobody is home?

Yes, if there is somewhere covered to put it — a passage, a back yard with a roof over the store, a garage you leave open. Put it in the order notes and the driver stacks it there. Bags left on an open stoep in a Cape winter are not our recommendation.

Do you supply the restaurants, cafés and guest houses on Lower Main Road and Main Road?

Yes. Restaurant-grade lump charcoal, briquettes, kameeldoring and firewood in quantity, on a standing order that runs with the Southern Suburbs run days and lands at the kitchen door. LP gas through our sister company Help U Gas. us for trade pricing.

Order for the next Southern Suburbs run

Order by Thursday 15:00 and Friday’s truck comes off Liesbeek Parkway with your bags — carried up the steps and stacked at the fireplace.
