Best for / not for
- Mopane braai wood is for fires that have to last: meat going on in rounds, a leg of lamb over the coals, or a cold, wet night by the fire.
- Mopane or kameeldoring? Both are dense Namibian hardwoods for a long fire. Kameeldoring wood has long-holding coals, for a crowd; mopane burns slowly with a sweet bushveld smell, for a long cook or a potjie.
- Try it next to four other braai woods in the braai wood combo.
- Closed-combustion unit? We recommend Blue Gum or Blackwattle.
- Weber or kettle braai? Use briquettes.
How to light it
Mopane is dense, so give it a start: a firelighter under a handful of kindling, a few pieces on top with gaps for air, and time before you add more.
Mopane: common questions
What is mopane wood good for?
Long, slow fires, with a sweet bushveld smell. Mopanie hout burns slowly to a thick bed of coals: a long braai, a potjie, the open fireplace.
What does mopane wood smell like?
A distinctive, sweet bushveld smell. Mopane is very fragrant wood, so it suits a long, slow braai where the fire is part of the evening.
Is mopane good for a potjie?
Yes, its slow burn suits a gentle simmer. For fine control, feed the pot with our potjie wood, Kindling / Potjie, a few sticks at a time.
Can I use mopane in a pizza oven?
No. Mopane is for long, slow fires; a pizza oven wants Blue Gum or Blackwattle, with a few pieces of Swarthaak for extra heat.
