Blue gum wood (bloekom) is seasoned Western Cape firewood in a 20kg bag of about 20 pieces: the kaggelhout for the nightly fire, in an open fireplace or a closed-combustion unit. The Firewood Company delivers it from Parow across Cape Town, the Winelands and the West Coast.

How to light it
Put a firelighter under a handful of kindling and stand three or four pieces of bloekom hout over it. Use pine kindling in an open fireplace, untreated kindling in a closed unit.
Blue Gum: common questions
Is blue gum good for a closed-combustion fireplace?
Yes. Blue Gum is one of the two woods we recommend for a closed unit, with Blackwattle: it lights readily and settles into a strong, even burn.
Blue gum or black wattle: which firewood should I buy?
Blue gum for the nightly fire: it lights readily. Black wattle is denser, burns hotter and leaves better cooking coals. Both? Our firewood combo has 10 bags of each.
Is blue gum good for a pizza oven?
Yes: it's one of our two pizza-oven woods, with Blackwattle. Blue gum lights readily; for extra heat, add a few pieces of Swarthaak.
Can I braai on blue gum wood?
In a pinch. For cooking coals, Blackwattle or our braai woods do better: kameeldoring for a crowd, rooikrans for speed.
